Gruppe 83 in Kannenbäckerstad
. . . . . . . . .
The annual ceramics market in “Kannenbäckerstad” Höhr-Grenzhausen is always a pleasure to visit in early June, not only for the wonderful atmosphere and variety of ceramicists, but also because of the location along the narrow streets still full of character and charm. Höhr-Grenzhausen also boasts the Keramikmuseum Westerwald, an abundance of studios and workshops, and not least a quaint cultural-historical museum portraying life in the town that was, of course, once a thriving centre of Westerwald salt-glazed stoneware pottery.
The inspirational ceramics museum is one of the largest museums for ceramics in Europe and always hosts exciting, vibrant and thought-provoking exhibitions by leading artists around the world. Besides the ever-interesting permanent exhibition, on display now are works by Akiko Hirai, an amazing jar by Claude Varlan, and a contemporary take on the egg cup: a feast for your eyes if not your stomach! But also, you still have time to see the current exhibition by Gruppe 83 (Groep 83), a loose network of Germany-based ceramicists celebrating its 40-year anniversary. The exhibition is titled Identitäten or Identities and includes sculptural forms as well as some wonderful wall art by Petra Bittl, Svein Narum, Cathy Fleckstein and Christa Gebhardt. The exhibition runs until 23 June 2024.
