Andenne

The small town of Andenne in Belgium has a rich ceramic tradition dating back to the early Merovingian period between the 5th and 8th centuries. During the Middle Ages, Andenne was renowned for its red and white “Andenne ware” made with the local loam (called blanche derle). The museum in the cultural centre, Le Phare, houses an interesting collection of local work, including an amazing 12th century object displaying the heads of sick individuals as a votive offering. Today, Andenne hosts an annual ceramic market in late spring.
