Shiro Tsujimura

The exhibition Shiro Tsujimura: Echoes of Nature, Artistry of Self is currently being held at the Axel Vervoordt gallery in Wijnegem just outside Antwerp. It is a perfect setting for showcasing the works of this celebrated artist. The exhibition features a number of large Tsubo jars in Shigaraki, Bizen and Iga styles, each displaying the characteristics of form, various clay bodies and glazes typical of the wares of the specific region.
Born in 1947, Tsujimura began his artistic career studying painting, but instead of finishing art school, he chose to withdraw to the remote Sanshoji temple to undertake a monastic training. In 1970, while visiting the Japan Folk Crafts Museum in Tokyo, he was fascinated by the beauty and sincerity of an early Ido tea bowl he discovered hidden in the corner of the museum. Tsujimura experienced a spiritual connection with this simple bowl, which for him embodied the qualities of peacefulness, self-reflection and a sense of impermanence that pervades life. It was then that Tsujimura embarked on his own journey to become a potter. He has since become one of the leading figures in Japanese ceramics.
The exhibition runs until 21 December 2024 and coincides with the newly published book: Shiro Tsujimura. An Art of Living (Flammarion, 2024).
